According to Northjersey news planning for a new tunnel, dubbed the Gateway Project, is expected to start later this year and take 10 years to complete. Amtrac officials say the project may cost $23.5B of which about $8B will go towards creating new tunnel and maintain existing ones. Half of the funding may come from federal government while the other half may be split between New York and New Jersey taxpayers.

The new tunnel, if completed, would be a welcome news for NJ commuters as the existing tunnels are century old, running at full capacity and extensively damaged with salt water in 2012 by hurricane Sandy.
